Answers about Hemorrhoids

What exactly is a hemorrhoid?

Everyone has hemorrhoids, it’s not until the hemorrhoids become symptomatic that they are considered a disease. Hemorrhoids in their healthy state work as cushions in the anal canal, expanding and contracting according to blood flow. These cushions allow for a healthy functioning anal canal, stopping accidental leakage and allowing stools to pass without tearing. What can happen though is that these veins can stretch if they come under too much pressure, when this happens, the vein then can become damaged.

How common are they?

Quite common, over half of all people living in the US will suffer from hemorrhoids at some point.

What are the different types of hemorrhoids?

The two main types are internal hemorrhoids and external hemorrhoids, internal hemorrhoids are located within the anal canal and external ones are found directly at the anal opening.

What are the symptoms of hemorrhoids?

  • Pain
  • Itching
  • Burning
  • Swelling
  • Bleeding

Because internal hemorrhoids are located above the dentate line, this type of hemorrhoid may only exhibit bleeding as a symptom. The upper portion of the anal canal above the dentate line has no pain sensors.

What is prolapse?

Prolapse is when a hemorrhoid gets so swollen that it bulges out of the anal canal, it is a potential complication. Hemorrhoids are graded on a scale of I to IV with IV being the most serious grade. Grade I have no prolapse, Grade II prolapse but go down on their own, Grade III prolapse but can be manually placed back inside the anal canal, Grade IV is prolapsed hemorrhoids that can’t be manually reinserted. The strangulated hemorrhoid is a Grade IV hemorrhoid, this hemorrhoid becomes trapped outside the anal canal when the sphincter muscles contract.

What are the causes of hemorrhoids?

Straining during bowel movements is the leading cause of strain to the anal veins leading to hemorrhoids. Other potential causes include diarrhea, pregnancy, obesity, genetics and aging.

Can I learn how to get rid of hemroids?

If you have Grade I or Grade II, it may be possible to manage your condition with diet alone. This is the single most important thing you can do for all grades of hemorrhoids, but once hemorrhoids get to a more serious Grade II or above, this alone may not be enough. Once hemorrhoids get more serious, hemroid treatment options such as rubber band ligation or surgery may be required.

Acne Laser Treatment

Friday, May 28th, 2010

The frustration of acne scarring and the low self esteem it causes can emotionally scar you for the rest of your life. The advent of acne laser treatment has given new hope to those who want a new lease on life. The benefits of laser based medical procedures have more positive benefits than negative. The cost is usually not covered by your personal healthcare insurance, but financial arrangements can usually be made at the doctor’s office. There is little to no discomfort, or side effects during or after your session and can take as few as six to eight visits to complete your acne scar reduction.

Cost of Acne Laser Treatment

As previously mentioned your health-care insurance will usually not cover the cost of any cosmetic procedures, and visits to a plastic surgeon’s office for treatment is going to be more costly than seeing a general practitioner. Plan on budgeting about three thousand dollars plus for the multiple visits that will be required to complete your acne scarring reduction. Usually prepayment is required if insurance is not involved, or payment for each visit can be an option as well. Essentially, be prepared to pay about four to five hundred dollars per visit and treatment.

Acne Laser Treatment Is An Out Patient Procedure

If you were having a face-lift done to remove acne scarring, then checking into a hospital, and staying over night would be the traditional way of having a scarring reduction performed. With laser treatment, you will only have to go to your doctor’s office to have your scarring systematically removed. There may be additional costs for medication to apply to your skin after each visit, which may be covered under your insurance. Since there are no anesthetics involved you will be able to transport your self to and from home for each appointment.

Reduction of Facial Redness and Lesions

The ultimate benefit will be smoother and cleaner appearing skin, but this might not be realized until the third or fourth visit while undergoing your outpatient procedure. When the final installment of the laser procedure is completed, the doctor will probably prescribe one or more post treatment creams and medications to apply for several weeks. Keeping your face clean and prevent further scarring a regiment of cleaning your face several times a day will most likely be required. Follow up visits and varying medical treatments may be needed to keep future acne scarring to a minimum.
