Fruit Juicers

Many people like to drink fresh fruit and even vegetable juice, because it is high in nutrients and minerals that are very beneficial to your health. How does a home fruit and vegetable juicer work, and why are there so many different models available? Here are a few answers you may have been looking for.

Basically there are two main sorts of juicers, fast ones and slow ones. The fast ones are called centrifugal juicers and are the common sort you see in department stores with the other appliances. The slow ones are called masticating juicers, and are less common, using a totally different system of juice extraction. Both types have their advantages and unique perks.

Centrifugal juicers consist of an upright cylinder, inside of which a vertical drum is spun at high speed by and electric motor. The drum is like a big cheese grater – it has lots of little cutting blades, and as it spins, it shreds anything that is dropped in to it. This is exactly what happens when ingredients are put in: The spinning barrel rips everything into tiny bits, and due to the spinning (or centrifugal – hence the name) action, juice is flung out and collected at the bottom of the cylinder.

This system is very fast – fruits or vegetables are processed in a very short time.

The other kind of juicer, the masticating type, works instead by using a slowly turning screw or auger to crush everything though a small opening. This is a lot slower – but the advantage is that more of the liquid inside the fruits and vegetables is squeezed out. When the ingredients are dropped into the masticating juicer it is like putting them in a food processor, but the liquid and the pulp is ejected separately.

So a masticating juicer is slower – why would anyone buy one? The reason is that the juice it makes is richer in vitamins and nutrients. Thanks to the pressure exerted by the slowly turning screw, tough fibers and stems are broken down, releasing the goodness inside.

So centrifugal juicer are faster, but masticating juicers make better juice. Life is so full of choices! Most people eventually buy basic centrifugal juicers because they are simply more practical to use.
