Oval Rugs
When you are looking for a new area rug for your home you will find many rugs in all kinds of shapes, but the vast majority of them are rectangular, square or round and there are fewer oval rugs to find by a long shot. It is not only their relative rarity that makes them special but also the kind of rugs that get made into an oval shape.
It is generally the more precious traditional rugs and hand made rugs which deviate from the norm, perhaps because factories and mass production are more geared up to producing vast quantities of rectangular rugs, in particular. Rectangular rugs are easier to form during the weaving or manufacturing process and shapes are easier to cut out with no waste.
An example of the kind of rugs you get in an oval shape are braided rugs. These are formed from three strands of fabric braided together to form a rope which is then coiled around and stitched together to form a flat oval shape. They were first created during the settler period by women using old clothes, which were cut into strips and joined together to form lengths of fabric. The rugs in those days reflected whatever the settlers had worn out and so were not particularly colorful although they would be a mix of various dull colors and patterned fabrics as a rule. Today, the colors are carefully chosen and arranged by artisans to form attractive patterns. You know if you buy a genuine oval braided rug you are adding a work of art to your floor and you will have to pay quite a bit for the privilege.
Of course, you can buy other types of oval rug including machine made rugs but in each case you will pay a little more than the equivalent size in a rectangular rug, simply because of the extra complexity of manufacturing and that makes them a little more exclusive.
