Camping as an outdoor activity involves nature. Different types of camping activities include hiking, hill climbing, canoeing, mountain biking, fishing, bird watching, exploring caves etc. Campers basically fall into three distinct groups. Individuals who go camping alone are also called as back packers. Groups of campers often go as a team of four to five members. Lastly we have the recreational campers which consist of an entire family with elders and children.

Individual campers are normally used to going on such trails. They carry minimum amount of camping gear in their backpack. They know what equipment to use and what things to carry. However for the first timers and families going on a camping trip, would mean days of meticulous preparation.

First activity in the list of things to do would be to select the place for camping, find out more about the particular place, facilities available, travel arrangements required etc. Depending upon the number of days available with you, work out a detailed plan for travel, reaching the place, camping days and return travel back.

The second phase of planning involves preparing an exhaustive inventory of camping equipment requirement. Break down the list of things required into three main categories namely – camping gear, food and groceries, essential medicines and utilities. Other person specific requirements can be left to the individuals to plan and carry.

Basic camping gear includes tents, sleeping bags, mattresses, camping chairs, mosquito nets, torches and flash lights and a tool kit. Accessories will include cooking utensils, pots, grills, gas stone, plates, spoons and knives, cups etc. A list of ready-made foods and other ingredients for cooking can be kept ready. Very importantly one needs to carry a first aid kit and emergency aids like a mobile phone or two way radios if possible. The clothes and boots would have to be also inventoried along with back pack bags required to carry these items. Other specific things include gear for fishing or other activities, things required for lighting camp fire etc.The more time you spend time in planning and procuring, the lesser will be the time spent on buying. Go ahead and enjoy your camping trip.
