Oak Dining Table
Tuesday, July 20th, 2010Because oak is such an elegant, durable (and sometimes rare) wood it makes sense to do everything that you can to look after it. Let’s say that you’ve just bought an oak dining table for your home. You want this table to last for at least 10 years (at the very minimum), but do you what you’re going to do to achieve this?
First of all, you need to make sure that your dining table (and the oak dining chairs that come with it) is placed in an environment that is suited to them. This means keeping it indoors (obviously) in a place where the heat is fairly consistent and where it isn’t too hot (anywhere around 70 degrees Fahrenheit is good). Keeping wooden furniture in a place where the heat fluctuates a lot is a bad idea, since the wood expands and contracts with the heat, often resulting in long term damage.
Now that you’ve found a suitable area for your oak table, you need to know about how you actually take care of your furniture. It’s always a good idea to use a table cloth and/or coasters (for drinks) to keep stains off of the table and to stop any rings from being left on there. In addition to this, it’s important that you dust off your table every few weeks (at least). This is not just to keep it looking clean and fresh, but also to remove the dust mites that linger if not properly removed. These dust mites like to breed and will eventually start to ruin the surface of your table by adding moisture to it. Although dusting is easy, it is something that shouldn’t be overlooked or forgotten about.
Lastly, try to keep your table out of the way of direct sunlight (either from a window or a skylight). While the sun won’t ruin your table overnight, it will slowly start to damage it over a period of time, so it’s best to try and avoid it whenever possible.
