Personalizing Your Breakfast Nook
Monday, August 2nd, 2010As I have grown older and done adult things like buy a house and have children, I have been forced to leave my bohemian lifestyle behind and make choices that are more appropriate for someone with a family. One of the compromises that I have made is with furniture. When I was in college, I liked to get my furniture sets like the breakfast nook piecemeal at flea markets and yard sales. Now a days, I am forced to buy factory manufactured sets so that my kids can reach the table and I know it is safe. Some old furniture has lead paint or other contaminates that I do not want around my kids. However, I have found ways to make the factory stuff more my style.
First of all, there is no reason that breakfast nook sets have to stay the same color or stain shade as when you bought it. Strip away the stain and paint the table is colors that you enjoy or that go with your kitchen decor. If you are feeling adventurous you can paint each chair a different way to make things look more eclectic.
In addition to painting, you can change the table tip surface if you would like. Adding a tile table top is a great way to personalize a piece of furniture. You can choose tiles that match the back-splash in your kitchen and it will look like the table was custom made for your kitchen. Or, you can design a mosaic drawing of a person or place that is important to you. If you have children, let them paint a few tiles with their own designs and artwork. Then you can work those pictures into your tile design. I had each of my kids make a hand print on a tile and now I have a daily reminder of how much they have grown.
